Why is so little known about the Phoenicians?

I would expect their history would be better preserved as they were the first to create a written alphabet.

It all boils down to the fact that they didn't create any "Phoenician empire" like Alexander the Great or like the Romans. Carthage lost its fight with Rome, so its language, literature and culture were eventually forgotten and we know them only from the description of Greek or Roman authors. The same goes for the parent cities in Phoenicia.
