Why is New York City nicknamed "The Big Apple?"

The term, first coined in 1909, was used in John G. Fitzgerald's popular horseracing column "Around the Big Apple," beginning in 1924. New York had many racing tracks, and the purses in New York were some of the biggest in the sport. Concurrently, the term was also used by jazz musicians, referring to New York as the "biggest apple" with the most lucrative nightclubs (interestingly, this nickname was also applied to New Orleans before it was given the "Big Easy" moniker). In the early 30s, the Big Apple Jazz Club opened, and its distinctive logo attracted prominent musicians; in 2007 the building was turned into a Popeye's and the famous logo chiseled out. By the 1950s, the term was mostly used in underground music circles and among Broadway performers. In 1971 it was revived by Charles Gillett and used to promote tourism in the city (along with the iconic I <3 NY logo). It has stuck as a nickname for New York City ever since.
