Was Latin the most common language in Europe in the Middle Ages?

Wondering if people spoke two different languages what would be the first language they'd try out as a middle ground?

Latin in the West and Greek in the East would be the languages to try if you wanted a middle ground.

That doesn't however, mean they were the most common languages, nor that all those who were supposed to have understood them would have full mastery of them. A great number of clergy only knew enough Latin to muddle through mass.

These languages were, however, the languages often acquired by the type of people who would have the need for a middle linguistic ground.
