I'm working on a writing project concerned with ancient Greece and I would like to have a better general understanding of what daily life would be like for people at all levels of society: common meals, entertainment, social customs, work schedules, what parties were like, etc. I'm looking for reading material that would be better for a beginner on the subject. I've seen lots of questions recently on subjects of this type and you all gave some really interesting answers! Thanks!
Well since you are looking to get some good basic reading about the daily life of a Greek in the Greek world and probably do not want to read a textbook, I am recommending reading these two books:
A Culture of Freedom: Ancient Greece and the Origins of Europe by Christian Meier and Kurt Raaflaub
http://www.amazon.com/Culture-Freedom-Ancient-Greece-Origins/dp/0199747407
And
House and Society in the Ancient Greek World (New Studies in Archaeology) by Lisa C. Nevett
http://www.amazon.co.uk/House-Society-Ancient-Studies-Archaeology/dp/0521000254/ref=pd_sim_sbs_b_4
I am recommending these books because these authors have proven themselves as great scholars, great writers, and they got their books published by the two university presses that only print exceptional pieces of scholarship. Additionally, I have suggested you read Christian Meier and Kurt Raaflaub’s book when you read Lisa Nevett’s archaeology based book about the domestic scene in ancient Greece (the oikos as the ancient Greeks called it) because it is important to understand the Greek political and social culture. And from seeing these shifts in Greek political and social culture, you will be able to see how it corresponds to the domestic lives of the ancient Greeks more directly. Then you will be able to come to better conclusions about who played what roles in Greek domestic culture during certain time periods and consolidate other ideas you think of.
Also if you want to read this, I also recommended that you read Xenophon’s Oeconomicus (there are many editions of it so you can pick your favorite, the loeb classical version is probably the best). This is the best primary text that explains ancient Greek life for males, females, children, and slaves. It is a discourse written by Xenophon that explains how a male in Athens manages his estate and how he interacts with the people in it. This book by Xenophon is pretty short itself but all of this together is a lot of reading but at the same time it is valuable reading because it is very comprehensive reading. These books cover a large gap of time in Greek history but also hit all the important details you need to know before tackling more complicated research questions. So I recommend taking your time with this reading, absorb the information, and take time formulating your ideas. These books are written by accomplished Greek historians and archaeologists that know what they are doing and will be good sources for you.
