Some people say that video games "are a danger to society",what other forms of media/technologies were the cause of a Moral Panic back in earlier generations?

Today: I hear people saying all the warnings about playing video games. That video games can lead to ills such as: violence, addiction, anti social behavior, and a waste of time and money. What older forms of media and technologies were frowned on in earlier generations.

I can help on this.

In 1954 Dr. Fredric Werthem wrote a book, Seduction of the Innocent, about how he felt comic books were ruining kids minds. There were certainly comics, as there are now video games, that are inappropriate for kids, but he got pretty extreme. Among other things, he went as far as to say even super hero comics were corrupting the youth of the fifties. I found copy of his book here. This was not some crazy guy writing a book, this was a bestseller!

In the 80s something similar happened with Dungeons and Dragons when this lady's son committed suicide, and also happened to be a D&D player. She formed the group Bothered About Dungeons & Dragons and they went across the country spreading their message. Their message was that D&D led to satanism and suicide. Apparently, everyone did not think they were completely crazy. Christian groups aired their 'PSAs' and Australian advocacy groups took on their cause, spreading their information.

It seems that all throughout the Rock and Roll era, people have claimed rock music as subliminal messages about worshiping the devil. At this website you can hear some examples for yourself. So 2 more kids committed suicide, this time they happened to listen to Judas Priest. They were also addicted to drugs and alcohol, but nevermind that. So what did the parents do? Sue Judas Priest, claiming backward messages in the songs tried to convince listeners to commit suicide ^^1.

These are just a few examples, but I hope they are what you're looking for.

Jazz was often seen as a culprit of societal corruption, as well as rock. Famously, the song "Louie Louie" was thought to be perverse. In reality, the lyrics were fairly innocent, but were so hard to hear that people made up their own assumptions about what was being said.

In the games department Dungeons and Dragons created a moderate craze in the 1980's.

Here is a great(Bad) movie from 1982 that is cleverly called Mazes and Monsters.

It stared Tom Hanks in his younger days.

Patrica Pulling Started B.A.A.D. An Anti DnD orginization and like today against video games flooded the courts with lawsuits etc.

On a darker note there where several murders blamed on or attributed to DnD during the 1980's that really ratched up the scare level.

James Egbert was the first and what the Tom Hanks movie was based off of. It turned out he just killed himself but the story did not come out for a long time.

Lieth Von Stein was accused of killing his parents for money but the DnD focus came from him having a map of his house for one of his DnD games.

This scare coincited with the 1980's Satanic scare that was highlighted by the West Memphis Three incident and the McMartin Preschool Trial.

It was a perfect storm of ignorance.
