What was the day-to-day life of a teenager living in 1985 USSR? (xpost /r/askreddit)

I'm currently working on a short story, and I'd like to know more background to flesh out some characters with just a tinge of credibility. The most I know is depicted it in my mind's eye as an Orwellian dead society with every member hiding with bated breath. I'd love to change my stereotype and ignorance with a more accurate picture.

A good documentary is called My Peristroika. It used to be on Netflix. It is about several people who grew up during the last breath of communist Russia and had to adjust their adult lives after 1991. A good book on modern (a loose term) Russia is the 5th edition of A History of Russia by Nicholas v. Riasanovsky. You probably only want the last two parts so I would recommend checking it out at a university library if you have one. Sorry no italics, on the phone about to head to class.

Is there anyone who can recommend books on this subject? Not necessarily on the life of a teenager, but daily life of people in the USSR (probably Moscow/Leningrad/Stalingrad)?

I remember having seen a TV documentary made by the East German television about youth subcultures ( punks, goths, skinheads...) in the last decade of East Germany existence. I have absolutely no idea how it was called or where to find it but if someone know what I'm talking about, it may be of some help in this thread...
