Very interesting thought. I can imagine that democratically things would have remained similar as far as government structure. Obviously, slavery would have continued in the south which would have continued to strain relations between the two. Also, given the intense belief system on either side, I bet that underground smuggling of slaves out of the south would have continued and led to violence. I also expect that trade relations would have been severely strained between the two new countries and given the fact that the north was industrializing and the south was primarily involved in agriculture, I am guessing this would have been a very difficult transition. I wonder if this would have influenced The Norths need to increase trade with other countries such as Great Britian etc. Certainly things would be very diffferent for all of us now.
