The previous Flair thread was chock-a-block, so it's time to retire that one and start anew.
You do not have to re-apply for your Flair.
But if you WANT Flair, and you think you're awesome enough, then this is the place to apply. Flair is that coloured text you will have seen next to some user's names, which indicates their specialisation. There is a list of active flaired users on our wiki. The list gives a damn good sense of just how varied our Flair'd users are now, and there is always room for more.
##How to apply
To apply for a flair, post in this thread.
The first thing to do before applying, however, is to make sure you understand how posting works in the subreddit. Look at the rules listed on the sidebar. Seriously, do that now.
The second thing to do is to think about what flair requires of you:
You are claiming to either have professional knowledge, degree-level knowledge or self taught knowledge in your area of choice.
You are claiming to be able to back up your comments in your area of speciality with sources when asked to provide them.
You must be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and pleasantly.
You must live our SubReddit's unoffical motto - “Be Excellent to One Another”
Okay, CrossyNZ, I've done that. What now?
We generally ask that these comments are of a high quality but also demonstrate your ability to command source material in your given subject. If you feel that three posts are not enough to demonstrate your expertise, then a maximum of five comments can be linked to. Users who post more links than this will be asked to edit their post.
Anything that is too broad will not do, for example 'America'. Narrowing your field of expertise to a topic/location; eg 'World War II European Theatre' or '18th century Philosophy'. There is a limit as to how long a flair can be, so if your suggestion is the size of a small sentence we will have to ask you to shorten it.
A flair does not restrict what you can post about, and if one area you are knowledgeable in is not represented in your flair you would still be able to post about it.
##Askhistorians Wiki
Gaining flair will let you edit the following pages on the subreddit’s wiki; our list of recommended books, our list of recommended online resources, and our frequently asked questions page, all found via these links.
If you want to add a book to our list, we would strongly recommend that the entry provides information about how to borrow the book from the library or to additional metadata: examples of websites that would do this include WorldCat, Google Books, and Open Library. If the book is available as a free and legal eBook, then by all means link to this instead.
If you want to add to our FAQ, it should be in the form of adding new popular questions, or linking to better answers for existing entries on our list.
An addition to the FAQ, resource list, or book list may be subject to removal at the mod team’s discretion, though we hope we will never have to do this. If we end up removing your addition, we will message you to inform you about this.
##Quality Contributors
If you see an unflaired user consistently giving excellent answers, they can be nominated for a "Quality Contributor" flair. Just message the mods their username and some example comments.
##Revoking flair
Having a flair brings with it a greater expectation to abide by the subreddit's rules and maintain the high standard of discussion we all like to see here. The mods will consider revoking the flair of anybody who continually breaks the rules or fails to meet the standard for answers in their area of expertise. Happily, we almost never have to do this.
We DO, however, frequently remove Flair for inactivity. Inactivity here is defined as no posts in six months. Please keep posting!
Gaining flair changed my life forever. Women found me more handsome, men deferred to me, and I started getting invited to more parties. Soon I was courted by government officials, and the leaders of some of the smaller European states, and there is talk of an an official diplomatic posting. Of course now there are the shady characters and odd assassination attempt, but it's part of the job.
I'll prepare the hazing of the new recruits.
I have a specialty that I‘ve never seen asked about. Is there a way I can get flair or should I just tough it out until something pops up?
I'm going to give this a shot, at the very least to figure out what more I can do for credentials. I'm not sure quite how to divide these up, but I'd like to go for something of a double flair like Early-Middle Dynastic China | U.S U.K Industrialization. Alternatively, the Chinese history could be more specific like "Literature and Culture" or more generally "China".
Talking about 西游记 and the religious situation of the Tang dynasty
Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands This one is a bit smaller, I apologize. I tried to keep it short so as to not get into too much depth for the asker about the background.
Industrial Revolution: Steam, Textiles, and the Home
I could add more references for either if you'd like, I just didn't want to post too much here for the sake of brevity.
I would like to use this time to apply for some flair. What is the best possible avenue for finding all my comments from my posts here? Digging through my notes? Most of my sources come from lecture notes and personal papers, how can i attach them or email them to someone?
As far as expertise I would like to say Modern Europe 1871-1945 [Specifically the Interwar Period and the First World War] and/or Lewis and Clark Expedition. However, as not a lot of Lewis and Clark expedition posts have gone on here I think the Modern Europe would be better. What does the moderator committee think in regards to my inquiry about a possible flair.
If you want to see work pieces from essays let me know. Seminar presentation paper is on Gallipoli: Command Incompetence at Cape Helles. It would be my hope to do an AMA on the paper itself in the future if granted flair. Edit:
Examples I have found: If you want more I made some more posts today around 300 words. A bit short, but I feel as though they are good answers.
Two strongest examples:
2,284 words: Sources provided in the thread. http://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/1t2n6m/how_did_germany_fund_their_rise_out_of_the/
1,796 words: Sources can be provided if needed. Though I'll have to be given a bit to find my lecture files. http://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/1qw82w/how_did_hitler_and_other_european_leaders_view/
328 words: A bit short of 400 words, but research was done in addition to already knowing about this. http://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/1qwop5/monday_mysteries_the_great_accidents_and/ -Penicillin
Dialogue entry: http://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/1qw2cn/why_didnt_the_ottomans_helped_napoleon_in_his/
Book recommendation thread: http://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/1yi821/i_would_like_to_learn_more_about_vikings_is_there/
Having been prompted by a very generous invitation from one of your flaired users, I would like to humbly request a flair of my own: Early Modern East-Central Europe | Religious borderlands. Please let me know if the proposed flair is too abstruse and I will adjust it accordingly.
Here are my sample responses and I thank you for your consideration.
How did Poland remain Catholic?
Is Ukrainian national identity a modern construction or is it grounded in history?
I already have flair but can I get it changed? It was a long time ago now that I got it and my focus has shifted somewhat. How about "Early modern Britain | Atlantic colonies"?
I had asked about this a while back (to which /u/Daeres was not very happy, as it means diminishing the already-small pool of experts on this topic even more), but...is there any way I can remove part of my flair?
I think 'Early Semitic Religion/Mythology | Early Christianity' would be more appropriate to the kind of content that I usually answer.
Hello!
I'd like to apply for flair. I'm a History PhD candidate, and my comps were in the fields of Indigenous history, Canadian social and cultural history, and gender and sexuality in colonialism.
I know it says minimum three, but I'd like to show you five posts I've made since joining a week ago. I think (hope!) these meet your criteria.
If you approve, I was thinking the flair could read something like "Indigenous/Pacific Northwest/gender & sexuality."
Thanks for your attention. :)
Edit: wording
Quick question on receiving flair: Can contributions of links to my own writing via an appropriate history subreddit (/r/WWI in my case) be considered as adequate proof of subject expertise?
I'm not sure that my posts are good enough (or frequent enough), but I did my MA work in the history of the Holocaust, with a particular focus on the postwar trials and a wider focus on the two world wars. I have a few comments that I think are up to the standards, but if not that's ok.
Did the Nazi Party in Germany seek to undermine Christianity, or uphold it?
I would like to apply to get my flair added as 13th-14th century Italian Society( in general Europe during that period but I focus mostly towards Italy.)
Some of my academic knowledge of the subject can be seen in the following threads: http://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/1lyr9j/were_there_arabs_and_asians_living_in_western/

I've had some people including moderators say they like my posts so I guess it's time to apply for flair! I'm not a historian but quite the enthusiast. I know most about Khoisan history, so I guess I'm requesting "Khoisan History" as my flair (how's that for a niche interest?). Here's some responses.
The woes of colonialism. I was hesitant about this because it's only a response to a small part of the poster's question, but it got featured on the twitter account so maybe it's good?
Hunter-gatherers are not all polytheists. This was a response to someone's inaccurate response to a top-level response and I took it as an opportunity to write about San religion while clearing up misconceptions.
If that's not good enough I'll just wait for more Khoisan-related questions and work on better answers.
Hello. Things specific to my field (19th cent France and French literature) don't come up very often, but when they do, I try to help out:
I have flair over at /r/askliterarystudies already, but I'd love to be a part of the team here.
I was wondering if I could apply for a flair in Early Medieval Religion (Pagan and Christian Expansion in Europe). My answers are below, but I understand are a little short on references. I can message a list of sources that I have used in the past if that would be useful.

(I also have knowledge of the historic persecution of the Jews, from the medieval period to the present day - http://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/1fyy74/to_what_extent_was_spain_a_site_of_tolerant/; http://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistory/comments/1dr7z6/why_didnt_the_jews_in_the_holocaust_pretended_to/)
I would like to apply for the flair in the category of Asian History and my area of expertise is the "Indian Independence Movement 1857-1947". I have gained most of my knowledge in self study( which I am doing for the purpose of clearing the exams of the Indian Bureaucracy). I am aware of the fact that there are members in the panel who specialize in Colonial India, however I aim to bring out the perspective of Indians with regards to their Colonization and as to how the Empire was perceived by Indians. How did Indians respond to the policies of the Empire(especially those that caused an uproar and added fuel to the fire of the Independence Movement) and What was the effect of the Empire on the lives of Indians .
In the following three posts I have aimed to do just that:
What were the causes of the 1857 sepoy rebellion in India?
EDIT: Grammar & a Question.
Mods, I would like to apply for flair in Southeastern Native American history. I haven't yet tackled any Appalachian history questions, but maybe I can come back for that later?
I appreciate your time!

Hi, I've recently had my East Asian flair removed due to inactivity for the last 6 months. I used to contribute regularly to this subreddit when it only had hundreds of members, and I'm ready to do so again.
I'm currently finishing off my degree in International Politics and Asian studies at the most prestigious university in my country. My main area of expertise is East Asian history, but I have dabbled in the classics and studied Latin.
Hello! I'd like to apply for some flair. I am new here, and I would very much like to stay! While I am a self-styled expert on just about anything Roman, my work lately has been on the evolution of Roman/Imperial ideals in the Eastern Mediterranean through the Byzantines and Ottoman Empire. A Middle Eastern Flair would, I think, be perfect! Linked below are some posts and my sources, let me know if you need anything else!
I'm wondering if the following posts are sufficient in your minds to justify removing the qualifier "American" from my flair. Certainly that was the focal point of my Ph.D. work, which is why it is there, but it is not the only thing I know about! Actually, I've published more on Calvin than any other figure. Thanks for considering it.
I do not know if this is enough, I am new to using this part of reddit, just thought I'd take a shot and see where I was at. Here are my four longest responses so far.

Most of my area of expertise is in the early Roman Empire and early Christianity. I did do most of my undergraduate work however in Viking history, more specifically in Norway.
Hey mods,
I want to add something to my already existing flair, and I've been told to mention it here. I would like to add 'political thought' to my existing flair, but there's a catch: I haven't been able to spot any history of ideas questions recently, and the closest one I've got is someone inquiring about Marxism, which I answered a while back. Is this enough?
Thanks!
I would like to apply for flair. I specialize in Pirate History (specifically the Golden Age of Piracy from 1690-1725), and have done academically for about 7 years now. I have overall knowledge in history of Atlantic Maritime World in the 17th and 18th centuries. I am finishing my Masters in Maritime Studies (specializing in just the history of the previously mentioned Atlantic Maritime History and not the archaeology that East Carolina University graduates usually do, but I've done my research into that as well). Here are my three examples that have been asked for (sources in posts):
Did Caribbean Pirates Smoke Cannabis
How did pirate communities of the 17th century or the "Golden Age of piracy" work
While I suspect all these examples need to be from Ask a Historian, here is an example from "Today I Learned" if it's any consolation.
http://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/2033he/til_that_many_pirates_in_the_early_1700s_in_the/cg1oztj
Hopefully I've provided enough evidence to demonstrate my expertise.
EDIT: I discovered and completed another post just today relating to piracy and just added it to the bottom of my list of posts from Ask A Historian. Again, the sources are in the post, and that new one includes large direct quotes from primary sources.
Can you nominate yourself for quality contributer?
I changed my flair on April 19th from "Theater & Performing Arts" to "Shakespeare & Theater History."
Can I have the South American portion of my flair removed? I haven't done any real research or reading in that field in sometime.
