Joseph Stalin was often displayed as larger than life and depicted as over 6 feet tall in most occurrences.
In reality he was shorter than Napoleon, coming in at only 5'5" to 5'6"
Robert E. Lee was not as anti-slavery as many people believe. I've seen it detailed on another sub, but I'll make sure to cite primary sources for my assertions below. Credit to /u/turtleeatingalderman on this one:
This letter to his wife details some pretty disturbing justifications for slavery, and its need to persist until a "divine intervention" of sorts:
In this enlightened age, there are few I believe, but what will acknowledge, that slavery as an institution, is a moral & political evil in any Country. It is useless to expatiate on its disadvantages. I think it however a greater evil to the white man than to the black race, & while my feelings are strongly enlisted in behalf of the latter, my sympathies are more strong for the former. The blacks are immeasurably better off here than in Africa, morally, socially & physically. The painful discipline they are undergoing, is necessary for their instruction as a race, & I hope will prepare & lead them to better things. How long their subjugation may be necessary is known & ordered by a wise Merciful Providence.
In the full letter, as best I can understand, he says that freeing the slaves against the wishes of providence would lead to angering "the Master", which I would presume is meant to be God in this context. Quote:
& if [the Abolitionist] means well to the slave, he must not Create angry feelings in the Master; that although he may not approve the mode which it pleases Providence to accomplish its purposes, the result will nevertheless be the same; that the reasons he gives for interference in what he has no Concern, holds good for every kind of interference with our neighbors when we disapprove their Conduct; Still I fear he will persevere in his evil Course.
As was detailed by his former slave, he wasn't particularly nice either, and kept his slaves as long as possible (which he inherited).
There are a lot of people who simply think "He was fighting for his state, he didn't want to", but his actions make that image a lot murkier than he would have us believe.
One of our key principles regarding questions is that they should be as precise as possible; we do not want threads that will attract only bad answers, or are so generalised that they cannot be answered. We will therefore remove questions that are seeking trivia rather than informed answers.
Our guiding principle is that if a thread can be summarised as "tell me random stuff about X through history" then it falls into this category of trivia rather than looking for in-depth answers which is this community’s main focus. Questions likely to be removed are those asking about all history and all places at once. If your question includes the phrase "In your area of expertise" strongly reconsider posting it, or making it more specific. Instead, any questions that are looking for trivia or for extremely general topics should turn to our weekly Meta threads; the Friday-Free-for-All thread in particular is well suited to many of these questions, as is the Tuesday Trivia thread. Many general questions have been well explored in the past, and you might find lots of interesting information in the archive of both Tuesday Trivia and Friday Free-for-All threads.
This is explained well in this moderator comment: please be specific in either your topic or your region/period (if not both!).
