Enfield cartridges and Sepoy Mutiny of 1857

by sharris333

Were the cartridges for the Enfield rifle really greased in pig and cow fat, or was that just a rumor? I have read both. Also, does anyone know of any good documentaries on the British in India? 17th-19th century only, not 20th. (Other than the two recent BBC series covering the overall history of the British Empire, which I have already seen).

The fact of the matter is that it is still debatable whether the British actually used greased Cartridges with Pig and Cow fat so there can be no convincing answer. The significant point in this case was not the fact that the British greased the cartridges but the fact that the British officer s did almost nothing to dispel the rumors that these cartridges were greased. This represented the growing difference between the Indian Sepoys and British Officials. Moreover the greased cartridge incident also gave fuel to the rumor that the British were trying to convert the people of India into Christians. The rumors had already been compounded by the fact that the British were actively promoting the Missionaries in the barracks (this was also due to the rise of growing evangelic thought amongst the British Officials who ,unlike their predecessors, looked down upon the customs and traditions of the Indians) Second was the fact that the Company litigated several act which the Indians viewed as aiming to destroy their Customs most contentious was General Service Enlistment Act 1856 (this act mandated sepoys of atleast one tenure of Foreign Service. The Caste rules of the Hindus at that time clearly stated that the crossing of sea was forbidden and meant losing of one's caste. The sepoys who had earlier served in the Burma Campaign were socially boycotted by even their fellow sepoys (in some cases).)

This factor of encroachment of the British in the traditions and customs was compounded by several other sources of disenchantment by the Company (which I have dealt with Here led to the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 and then the Mass Uprising as a result.
