What was commercialism like in 1920s America, and how did it shape the advertising industry today?

It's been a long time since I read the proofs of this book, so any info I give would be dulled by memory and a grad school education focusing on other things, but see Rick Fried's The Man Everybody Knew for a very good treatment of your question.

The title of the book is a play on Bruce Barton's The Man Nobody Knows, a wildly popular book that portrayed Jesus and his 12 disciples as a corporation of sorts, with Jesus as CEO and the disciples as department heads. The book was edited many times over the years, but if you get the original text (with Fried's introduction,) you'll have an enjoyable and informative read.
