I have been told, via a thread on AlternateHistory.com that perhaps surprisingly McCarthy was a staunch anti-racist and anti-segregationist, to the point of alienating many Southerners who supported his anti-communism. AH.com is usually reliable when they're talking about real history. However, I have not found any sources for this claim through quick google and duckduckgo searches. Can anyone clue me in and provide some good source material?
