Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but my mom and I had a question about a badge (?) we found on my grandfather's army uniform. Here's a picture. I believe he worked stateside as a training officer and after the war, he went on to be a ballistics engineer with the Army, if that helps. We were wondering what this particular badge signified, and were especially curious about the meaning behind the oil lamp (I think that's what it is).
That is a DUI, i.e. a distinctive unit insignia. They identified smaller individual units like regiments which did not have an SSI, i.e. shoulder sleeve insignia, like a division or a theater command would. I don't recognize it off the top of my head. Could you please post pictures of the entire uniform? That will help me to contextualize the pin.
EDIT: Please post more pictures anyway, but the DUI is for the Field Artillery Replacement Training Center at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. I will be able to tell you a lot more about your grandfather if you post the rest of the uniform.
