What was life like at home during WWII? Did business operate as usual? Or were there a lot of allowances/concessions?

For example:

  • Did people still have to pay their mortgages?
  • Did people go out for coffee/beers etc. on a regular basis?
  • People who had jobs not relevant to the war effort (accountants, chimney sweeps, etc.); did they still work as usual?

Any other interesting items like that.

Where is home for you OP? I'd imagine life would be very different in Europe to America or even Asia or Africa and will increase your chances of getting an answer
