Hey all, I was wondering if anybody could tell me about Reconstruction in the American South. Primarily, what were the main political policies the created the reconstruction, what the political landscape was like during the reconstruction era, and how the Compromise of 1877 essentially ended reconstruction in the south.
This question is nearly impossible to answer without spending many hours typing. So instead, I'll suggest a very good, very short book on the subject, Michael Perman's Emancipation and Reconstruction. It's probably not the best work on the subject (that would likely be Foner,) but Perman's book is much less about argument than it is about 'stuff.'
