I was reading through his Wikipedia page and it states that Pan dies, except the section on it is sort of confusing and has a lot of [citation needed] markings. I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this.
This discussion opens the door to the answer. This is part of a cycle of legends that describes the death of a supernatural being, but the cause of the death is not normally identified. The need for succession is the point of the legends, and so the early Christian world embraced it as a symbol - expressed in literature - of the transition from old paganism to new Christianity.
