I am a Biology scholar (or a professor) in either Europe or USA, ca. 1940 before the Modern Synthesis. How popular is teaching Evolutionary theory as part of a curricular class?

  • What are other alternatives inculcated?

  • How different is the corp of what was teached in those days to what we know today?

  • Was Evolutionary theory blatantly mocked within classrooms or among different educational plans?**

If needed or possible give details of the country, area or state related to your answer.

Can you explain 'the modern synthesis'? Mendelian genetics and Darwinian evolution, yeah?

Also, I have a follow up question, if I may: which sciences first took evolution seriously and integrated it into their research program? Which held out the longest? For example, I've been doing some research around the history of physical anthropology, and it seems like they were pretty skeptical of evolution until after WWII.
