Sadly for historians looking for an interesting story, the children's crusade is likely a myth. As with many things, it seems to have gotten accepted into a lot of narratives without actually questioning whether it occurred. I am not sure how the myth got started, or what the myth claims started the children's crusade, but there's no historical evidence for it.
