How did revolutionary France hold on to its colonies?

by Doggies_of_War

I would have thought it would be a logistical debacle with all of the upheaval.

It didn't. The only significant overseas colony that France retained by the beginning of the revolution was Haiti, and it lost it.

The 19th century French Empire was gained under the Republic.

I know this was a pretty short answer, but it's a very simple question. (Sorry mods!)
