Had they any idea of the world of the far east, and how did people respond to the discovery of the new world back in Europe?
If you mean in terms of geography, it would be something like a typical Mappa Mundi. The known world was divided in three parts: Europe, Africa and Asia. Roman geographers were aware of the true shape of most of Europe, Northern Africa and Western Asia, but this knowledge was lost to Europeans for centuries, while the Christian-inspired Mappa Mundi layout (with Jerusalem in the center and the Earthly Paradise in the Far East) was the accepted version.
