If so how were they similar/different from restaurants today? Who would the clientele have been? What was the status of a restauranteurs?

Not in the way we think of restaurants today, no. The idea of an enclosed public space specifically for dining, with a menu, tablecloths, etc. first appeared in 18th century Europe. Check out Rebecca Spang's The Invention of the Restaurant: Paris and Modern Gastronomic Culture.
