Edward Jenner's creation of a half-assed small pox vaccination 1715. While Jenner's 'vaccination' might not have been the best it opened up the idea of vaccination and immunization in western medicine. It's [vaccination] been named one of the modern miracles of medicine and its saves far more people than died in French Revolution and the ensuing 150 years of war.
