To be more precise my Tatar origin is from Uralic mountains so not the Crimeria tatars. My grandmother is from city of Ufa and is Muslim (so were her descendants). I wish to find books that talk about history of Tatars from the most earliest point possible. I can read in English and Russian. I have read some history about Sibir as the geographic location, and a lot about tatars is mentioned, but I would love to find a good book that talks only about tatars.
If you can read Russian, I recommend this book (second on the page, djvu format):
http://publ.lib.ru/ARCHIVES/N/''Narody_i_kul'tury''/_''Narody_i_kul'tury''.html
It is a giant volume, 580 pages overall, and of a very high academic quality. They have chapters dedicated to everything: from language to cuisine, from history to holidays and traditions, and more. The language may be a bit dry at times, but you can be sure of its quality, and all sources and references are provided.
I was interested in this stuff a while back, had read this textbook used in high schools in Tatarstan, pretty much the only book on the subject that looks any credible I could find. I believe there is a Part II that covers modern history. The narrative is a bit cumbersome, unfortunately.
From my experiences in Ufa, they sell quite some small-circulation books about local culture and history (Bashkir, in this case) in bookstores there, you could try visiting/finding someone from Kazan willing to help you out with this.
Any works by Western historians?
