How did lacrosse become the sport of the well-heeled in the Mid-Atlantic states?

It was invented by the Iroquois and still played in those areas, but the main hot-spots of the sport are the wealthy areas of Baltimore and Long Island. How did that come about?

As a followup question, in Wikipedia it says "When originally played by native peoples it was known by several different names, depending on the tribe, including "bagataway" or "the little brother of war" in the Inca language, and "tewaarathon" in the Mohawk language."

Since the Mohawk are in North America, while the Inca are in South America, is the Inca version of the game related to modern lacrosse?
