He was a fully accredited medical doctor who graduated from what was the best medical school in South America at the time (and remains one of the best to this day).

His research focus was in immunology but in practice he applied his medical training more in the capacity of a GP with some field experience in general surgery during the short period where he was actually primarily a doctor.
