How did native Americans deal with hurricanes?

As the title states. How did native Americans in what is now Florida deal with hurricanes? Also how did the island natives handle them? I would venture a guess they knew that during certain parts of the year the weather was going to get pretty bad.

Hi there! This is actually a fairly popular question, and one that has its own FAQ section which might give you some further information about this topic.

My focus is early America, however, my research focuses more on northern native Americans, so I don't know too much about natives living in the keys. I know plains Indians were extremely mobile, and once storm season set in, they probably took great care where they lived. As for southern tribes; im sure they would travel away from the coast if they saw a storm coming. It's difficult to say, but I doubt they "waited it out"
