How did the idea of rooting for the underdog enter western culture? (And where from?)

I understand that there likely will be no straightforward answers to this question, and it is in many ways speculative. I'm curious and interested in hearing all potential answers.

Depending on your definition, you could say it goes back quite a long way. For many centuries, it was very common to like and claim descent from the displaced refugee Trojans. Given that they lost the war, they could well be considered underdogs.
