after recently watching the monuments men movie i looked into the real life story. one thing i couldn't find too much information on was their involvement in japan. do any of you historians have any information on this? thank you
I'm in the middle of watching CSPAN2's "Panel Discussion of Robert Edsel's monuments men." One hour and 15 minutes in an audience member asked a question similar to yours. Mr. Edsel states that the UK has 5 or less Of their Monuments Men operating in Southeast Asia during the war. There were also about 5 or 6 Monuments Officers (He doesn't specify British or American, but I assume American) that operated in Japan, only after the surrender. He goes on to say that one of the main objectives for the European Monuments Men was the location, preservation, and repair of art. Due to the effects of the atomic bombs, these efforts were skipped in Japan.
