"Stalin's Generals" by Harold Shukman, published in 1993, is a good place to start. With the exception of Georgy Zhukov, Soviet generals tend to be ignored in English language books about WWII.
"When Titans Clashed: How the Red Army Stopped Hitler" by David Glantz & Jonathan House is a good one volume book on the Eastern Front of World War II.
Both of these books were offered by the History Book Club, when they were first published and are still available on Amazon.com
'Ivan's War' by Catherine Merridale is great for the experience of the Soviet soldiers
"Russia's War" by Richard Overy is a very quick overview, and is decent.
That said, the title is a bit misleading, since the USSR was so much more than Russia.
