I can recommend the newly produced series called "Soviet Storm",it follows the war on the eastern from Barbarossa to the fall of Berlin. I learned alot about the lesser known battles not commonly described in other books or documentaries. There are about 16 episodes 45min each. Can be found on youtube.

Also, i can recommend the book "Stalingrad" and "Berlin: The Downfall 1945" by Anthony Beevor, they give the view of the common soldier and civilian in correlation to the bigger war scene.
