In 1789 during the opening procession of the Estates General through Paris, the lavish and ornate fashions of the aristocracy and clergy made a very bad impression on the public. This inequality of wealth as expressed in the ostentatious fashions of the aristocracy was a cause of the French Revolution and from thereafter male fashion took note and produced a much more sombre and plainer style.
