Where did couples meet at the turn of the 19th century? What market have dating sites replaced?

In the UK, the upper classes (gentry, aristocracy) would attend society balls and other events including music recitals during the "London Season". The main reason for this was to match up girls of marriageable age ("coming out" was from the age of about 16/17) to eligible bachelors. Love wasn't a factor in many matches, if it developed then it was a happy accident.
