In recent history has any sovereign nations given up its sovereignty to join another nation like what seems to be happening in the Crimea?

Has any countries voted to no longer be a country and instead chose to join completely with another country. I am not thinking states becoming satellite states or joining something like the EU.

The only example I though of (which is not recent at all) was Scotland in 1707. Has there been any more recent examples?

The re-unification of Germany in 1990 might be a good example. Both West-Germany and East-Germany were independent and internationally recognized countries. East Germany then joined the West. This might have been easier cause it was a thing that was always imagined, and the West-German constitution (or Grundgesetz rather) allowed this very easily.

In 1990 North and South Yemen combined to form Yemen. In 1994 the various 'Bantustans' rejoined South Africa. In the 1870s various German statelets joined the German Empire.

Also, were Crimea to join Russia, it wouldn't fit your example since Crimea is not a sovereign state but a region (albeit a highly autonomous one) of Ukraine.

Dunno what you mean with recently... If it includes post ww2 you can say Austria at a voting on whether they should join the 3rd Reich in 1938... Voting was over 90% pro joining Germany though it is not sure to what extend the elections were riged and to what extent Hitler actually pressured the outcome by standing at the borders with military should the result of the election be different and you can Google Austrian anexation ballot they were pretty manipulative too

Would anyone count the Republic of Texas choosing to join the United States in this category?

Newfoundland did this twice.

It was originally a separate colony and became a British Dominion in 1907 (the same status as Canada, Australia, and NZ). However, the Great Depression his Newfoundland's export-based economy especially hard and the British government was asked to take over (following a series of political scandals and riots) in 1934.

Following WWII, Britain did not want to have to deal with the expense of direct rule any longer, so a plebiscite was prepared that offered two options: return to Dominion status or Confederation with Canada. Confederation ended up winning, 52% to 48% and Newfoundland became a province of Canada.
