Came across these Korean pieces featuring a rabbit, tiger, and I'm assuming a tobacco pipe, but I know nothing about them. Can anyone give me any info about whether these are more modern pieces or what history they might have?
EDIT: It seems this is a representation of a Korean folktale, but can I get any more info about the origins? Supposedly there are some Buddhist teachings reflected in the story.
Well, when the grandmother tells her grandsons and granddaughters a folk stories, she says "Long, long time ago, in a time when tiger smoked a pipe..." It is a way to say that the story took in far away past. A folk tradition, I suppose.
Also, remember that tobacco entered Korea during Imjin War, which was taken during Joseon Dynasty. Since Buddhism was repressed during this era, it is less likely that the drawings are Buddhist influenced.
