In Norse stories, what was 'red gold'?

by Andrhrimnir

Various Norse stories refer to something called "red gold," but I've been unable to find out what exactly was meant by the term. Searching Wikipedia brings up an article on gold alloys, but I doubt that this is what the Norse were referring to given Freya's tears of red gold and the gods covering Ótr's pelt with red gold.

Why?

I'm not familiar with the Norse context, but I do know coins, and every numismatic reference I've come across for red gold is referring to rose gold, that is, a gold-copper alloy.

I think telkanuru is probably right, but I'm just curious: what are the stories you are referring to? Source please :)
