Hello, I've read up on a couple wiki pages on the Vietnam war and its history but I'm not completely set on it. I've only become interested in it recently as my father is from Vietnam.
A little backstory of him:
My granddad (father of my father) moved to Vietnam from Southern China to escape the Chinese civil war at the time. My father was born in 1954 and he told me that when he was very young (about the age of 5) my granddad's stone house was bombed by the French (or possibly the US). Which caused him and his family to live on the streets for a while until they could build straw houses. At around 1974 his family moved to Canada and got accepted as refugees.
Of course there are some parts which he doesn't mention but he does recount some times where he would be in an underground shelter while bombs rained down on above. I'm curious about the history of Vietnam from 1954 and onwards.
Edit: A bit off topic but I'm told that my father's grand parents died on rickety boats because they were very unsafe and unsanitary but a method of escaping the war torn country.
Edit 2: I'm interested in events from 1954 to 1974 in areas around Northern Vietnam. The very north that borders China so around Hanoi.
Do you have any specific questions? You're asking for a huge slab of history which just realistically can't be summarized without running the risk of having it very superficial.
