One of the graves at Eridu, ca. 5000BC, contains a young boy and his dog. With the dog is a nice bone, a treat for the afterlife. Eridu was a settlement of the Ubaid people, a preliterate culture. Although Eridu has much of what we'd consider a city, the lack of writing means boys loving their pet dogs predate civilization itself.
