The study of place names is called toponymy. Place names originate in a number of different ways. In some cultures, it's conventional to name places after people while others choose names based on geography. Some may simply adopt an earlier name while others will attempt to translate it. There are no hard and fast rules, so it would be easiest to explain the toponymy of a specific place.
