What are some really good biased and unbiased sources on the Spanish Civil War. I have already read George Orwell's book on the subject. Documentaries and books are welcomed.
The best all round books on the Spanish Civil war would be:
The Spanish Civil War by Hugh Thomas. Pretty much back to back factual narrative of the war in a rather huge book. Incredibly well regarded, despite its relative age.
The Battle for Spain by Antony Beevor. Another great narrative of the civil war. Focusses a bit more on the military aspect of the war, and is quite critical of the communists' role.
The Spanish Civil War: Reaction, Revolution and Revenge by Paul Preston. Probably my favourite one, since I quite like Preston's writing style. Quite a good narrative of the civil war and takes into account social factors as well as military. Preston uses lots of primary Spanish sources in his work.
The Spanish Civil War: A Very Short Introduction by Helen Graham is an incredibly well written little book. Although it's quite short, Graham's writing gives a very good introduction on the topic.
Those're the big all round books that I would recommend as an introduction to the war, but there're many more on far more specific topics. If you're interested in some more, ask away!
/u/tobbinator has provided some excellent works. I shall add only two.
Paul Preston: The Spanish Holocaust: Inquisition and Extermination in Twentieth-Century Spain. This book came out only a couple years ago, and I have not quite finished reading it. My full review will appear sometime in the nearish future on the Saturday reading feature, but for now I can heartily recommend the book. It details the noncombatant deaths during the war. I have very few reservations about the book.
Jose M. Sanchez: The Spanish Civil War As a Religious Tragedy. This is the book on anticlerical violence against Catholic religious during the war. Rather than being a polemic against the left, Sanchez examines the sources of anticlericalism in Spain, demolishes the idea of the Nationalists being on a "crusade", and is quite critical of the Spanish hierarchy at the time. The main portion of the book examines those murdered for their position as clergy or for their faith. Despite coming out a good time ago, the book has aged quite well.
