How did the early British settlers in Australia cope with the heat and weather, and still manage to engage in work like building roads and clearing land for farming?

From what I've read, the early settlers enjoyed the excellent climate and praised the mild winters. I've not noticed any mention about the occassional heatwaves, which undoubtedly occurred, but what can you do in such a situation? The same thing as in Europe or anywhere else, try to stay in the shade and well hydrated.
