As Christianity became more popular throughout the Roman Empire, I'm wondering if there was an effort by the Greco-Roman clergy to adapt the Christian God into their pantheon, under the name of one of their Gods or not.
Here's an extract from the wikipedia article: Interpretatio graeca
"Roman scholars such as Varro interpreted the monotheistic god of the Jews into Roman terms as Caelus or Jupiter Optimus Maximus. Some Greco-Roman authors seem to have understood the Jewish invocation of Yahweh Sabaoth as Sabazius"
