The United States and the Philippine War - was it necessary for the development and growth of the United States?

Who claims this or why would you think that? We might be able to give you a better answer if you tell us more precisely in which ways the Philippine-American War has supposedly contributed to the development of the United States.

My general answer to that question is a "no". The war cost hundreds of thousands of lifes. I don't see a scenario in which these deaths are necessary for the development of the United States. If you are cynical enough, guess one could argue that the Philippine-American War prepared the U.S. for its global military involvement. But so did the campaigns during the Spanish-American War and the navy was built up regardless of the events in the Philippines. In any case, Americans were increasingly critical of the Philippine-American War which seemed to contradict their political traditions and the justification for the Spanish-American War. The war in the Philippines might even have hindered other major military adventures as they became unpopular during that time - in sharp contrast to the Spanish-American War just a few years earlier.

As I said, I need to know why you (?) consider the Philippine-American War necessary to the development of the U.S. to provide you with a better answer.
