In the Glorious revolution 1688, William 3rd/William of Orange was 'invited' to invade Great Britain by a coalition of The Whig and Tory parties (the only two political parties at the time). James 1st, the regent, and a Catholic, had found it impossible to maintain peace and gain the support of the Protestant population. Facing the notably brutal but failed Monmouth Rebellion in 1685, amongst other threats. Parliament, which had lent King James de facto support up until 1688 was spurred into action by the birth of James first son. This meant that his Protestant daughter Mary was no longer in line for the throne and threatened to be the formation of the Britain's first Catholic ruling dynasty since Henry 8th. Invasion by the Dutch King William - husband to Mary - was viewed as a far more preferable. Following the landing of an invasion fleet in November, anti-Catholic and anti-Monarchists riots sprung up across the country. James accepted defeat after only two battles and fled the country. The invasion was welcomed and accepted by all but Britain's minority Catholic population.
