I don't see how, as an American, one could come to conclude the members of Saint Patrick's Brigade as being "heroes". They were members of the US military who deserted, joined enemy forces, and actively fought against their former comrades in arms. Nothing about that screams heroic, at least not from an American perspective, in fact it screams quite the opposite.
