If you want a good answer, perhaps it would be better to ask a stronger question. As it stands, you're making a blanket assumption that the British actually helped Hong Kong through their presence which is something you shouldn't automatically assume, but rather seek to discover through research and questions.

"Did the British have a beneficial influence on Hong Kong?"

Or

Over the course of a century's occupation, what lasting changes occurred in British Hong Kong?

Or actually ask about specific things like

How did a century's rule affect Kong Kong? Were there famines? How steady was the economy? Did British bureaucracy create any positive or detrimental legal systems and governmental institutions? How was city planning affected? Did people become more economically prosperous? Did a significant disparity in wealth occur as a result? What was free speech like on the island? Did the British have a positive or negative influence on the spirituality of natives? Did diets change considerably?

Or to get really in-depth, why not ask about what things were like before the British arrived, and track how different sectors evolved?
