Why do cities like New York and New Jersey have "new" in front of them?

by moumouren

Was there an "Old" York or "Old" Jersey they were referencing to?

York is a city in England, and Jersey is an island off the southwest coast of England. (links are to Google Maps)

New York "was named after the English Duke of York and Albany (and the brother of England's King Charles II) in 1664 when the region called New Amsterdam was taken from the Dutch." Source. New Jersey "was named for the Channel Island of Jersey in honor of Sir George Carteret (one of the two men to whom the land was originally given)." Source
