The spread of chain fast food places over the past few decades seems to be unprecedented. Now, any town will have a McDonlads, Wendys, burger king, tim hortons, 711, etc.
How did this spread happen, and what are some resources that cover it?

I don't have a source on me at the moment but if I'm remembering correctly from my 20th century American history class it was in large part due to the process of suburbanization which meant a lot of people commuting from the suburbs to the cities for work.
I'm going to email my professor and see what he can tell me, it was only briefly mentioned in lecture.
