From what I can tell, most roman infantry units (pre-and post-Marian reforms) had really short range. How did they handle fighting against a wall of pikes?
Main tactics would be to flank it as mobility would be a major advantage on the Roman's side and also Roman infantry would be equipped with Pilum (Javelin with a tip that would bend on impact to render objects that it hits, e.g. shields, unusable) and they would use the Pilum to either force the enemy Phalanx to discard their shields or to disrupt their lines enough to be able to break the Phalanx. A good example of Roman infantry vs Phalanx warfare is the Second Macedonian War
