Specifically my dissertation will be about the outcome of the suppression for the members of the Order and the fate of their extensive possessions across Europe. Of course for this I need primary sources to back up my conclusions. The biggest barriers I've come across so far are language barriers (I only know English) and floods of pseudo-history from internet searches. All I want is some good references to primary sources (Hard copy or Digital) addressing the fate of the Templars and their property. I hope you can be of help.
EDIT: My apologies, a sentence in the description was badly worded. I do intend to draw conclusions from the primary sources and not impose any pre-existing opinions upon them, I am well aware the latter would be bad practice. I am studying at undergraduate level.
I would like to thank you all for your replies.
What level is this 'dissertation' for? University?
Well, any decent secondary source will give you primary sources. There is absolutely no other place to start on the Templars in English than Malcolm Barber's work. If you are doing a 'dissertation' on the Templars and you haven't read his work then I'm a little lost as to how one could even begin to approach the subject of the Templars. Barber's books, like any minimally scholastic work, will have bibliographies of the primary sources used in the text.
Malcolm Barber, The Trial of the Templars (Cambridge University Press, 2006)
Malcolm Barber, The New Knighthood. A History of the Order of the Temple (Cambridge University Press, 1994)
Of course for this I need primary sources to back up my conclusions.
Wat? I find this phrasing very odd. One examines primary sources and then draws conclusions, not make conclusions and then find sources to support it. The latter is generally considered pretty bad methodology. Perhaps I've misunderstood your intentions.
Anyway, you cannot write about this subject without referencing Malcolm Barber.
I'm hoping that this is only for undergraduate-level work -- otherwise your lack of knowledge of French or Latin is not acceptable for the project you have taken on. There is no substitute for being able to examine the primary sources in their original language. Translations are find for high-schoolers and undergrads, but by the time your are working on your Masters or PhD, you should at least have started working towards high-level reading ability in whatever languages are appropriate for your chosen sub-specialty.
