I'm not sure if this question is right here, but I'm looking for some books in that area - maybe there is even fiction with footnotes? I'm looking for books that explain and educate on the historical situation not books that are set there for purely atmospheric considerations.
If I'm mistaken by posting such a question here please don't ban me. I enjoy this subreddit too much.
All Quiet on the Western Front is terrific.
No one is going to ban you. :)
I don't really get what you are searching for, do you want fiction or accurate history?
Not really sure how accurate but Ken Follet's "Fall of Giants" is fantastic.
Paths of Glory. A Stanley Kubrick film, based off the novel of the same name, that deals with the attitudes of the generals toward the common soldier and its consequences.
Well if you want a good book told from the perspectives of the soldiers, "Company K" by William March is a good one.
hi! there are a shelf-load of book recommendations in the FAQ* - take a skim through these posts to find books set in WWI

It's not a book, and it's not even finished but you might want to check out Dan Carlin's Blue Prints for Armageddon http://www.dancarlin.com/disp.php/hharchive
It's basically a story telling style of podcast series about WW1, the only downside is there are only 2 parts currently out (about 3 hours each) and many more to come, it takes atleast acouple months for him to complete each episode.
